How to buy a used car in Denmark and bring it to Croatia

As a private buyer resident in Croatia, before paying, match the VIN, the seller, the purchase document and the original Danish registration documents.

As a private buyer resident in Croatia, before paying, match the VIN, the seller, the purchase document and the original Danish registration documents. Then plan the transport and the Croatian procedures separately. Because the car comes from a European Union Member State, this is the bringing of a vehicle into Croatia from another Member State, not an import. 1 2

Match the seller, VIN and documents before paying

Establish whether the seller is a dealer or a private individual and ask for an invoice or a sale and purchase agreement. Compare the VIN on the car and the documents, and check with an authorised representative whether the model can be registered in Croatia. 2 3 4

The Danish registration certificate has two parts. Check both originals and the signatory's authority; the first part accompanies the vehicle when it is driven abroad, but a copy of it cannot be used to transfer ownership. 5

Check Bilbogen before paying because a registered debt or security interest may follow the vehicle, and a roadworthiness test does not remove the encumbrance. The records do not prove the vehicle's complete history or condition, so inspect it for damage, modifications and repairs. 6 7

Potential Danish tax refundAgreement on the claimant, recipient and priceNo guaranteed refund or discount without a decision 7

The Danish tax refund is not an automatic discount

Before signing, agree in writing who will claim and receive any registration tax refund and how it will affect the final price. An encumbrance in Bilbogen on the date of the application results in rejection, and the formula has deductions and exclusions; do not count on a specific refund before a decision is issued. If the procedure is followed, it includes an extended registration or customs inspection, normally within four weeks when a valuation is requested, surrender of the plates and proof of export no later than three months from the valuation request. The receipt declaration is only supplementary evidence. 7 11

Choose the transport method after checking the entire route

Danish temporary stickers may be ordered no earlier than 14 days before first use and are valid for no more than seven days. The application states the driver and purpose, and even a person without Danish electronic credentials must follow the official procedure and provide supporting documents. Danish guidance expressly confirms one-way use of the stickers from Denmark to Germany or through Germany, but it does not confirm the entire journey to Croatia: for the actual driver, the dates and every other country, check recognition of the temporary registration and territorial insurance cover. If anything remains unconfirmed, choose transport by a vehicle carrier. 12 13 14

Transport by vehicle carrierQuote, collection, delivery and required documentsAlternative when driving, plates or insurance have not been confirmed 13, 14
Transporting the vehicle on a trailerAvailability and transport conditions for the vehicleDoes not require temporary registration of the car; confirm the conditions 14

Handle every Croatian procedure and deadline separately

First complete the conformity assessment for an individual vehicle, before submitting the special tax on motor vehicles (PPMV) declaration, undergoing the roadworthiness test and completing first registration. Bring the vehicle and provide its foreign registration certificate and, as applicable, its certificate of conformity (CoC), manufacturer's confirmation or technical specification. Its identity, originality, markings, components and measurable parameters are checked. Additional evidence, testing or modifications may be required, and a non-compliant vehicle may be refused. 2 3

For value added tax (VAT) purposes, the vehicle is used only if more than six months have passed since its first use and it has travelled more than 6,000 km. It is a new means of transport (NPS) if it is no more than six months old or its mileage is no more than 6,000 km. In that case, report the acquisition and pay Croatian VAT through the NPS procedure no later than 10 days after the acquisition evidenced by an invoice or agreement, and retain the evidence for registration. If both conditions for a used vehicle are met, additional Croatian VAT on the acquisition is generally not payable, but check the seller, the invoice and the VAT scheme. 8 9 10

Submit the PP-MV declaration no later than 15 days after entry into Croatia, together with the acquisition document, the foreign registration certificate and conformity evidence. Payment is a separate event: receipt of the notice or decision starts a new deadline of 15 days, and first registration cannot be completed without the completed procedure and proof of payment. 15 16

Do not enter the Danish purchase price, market price or invoice price as the PPMV basis. For a used M1 vehicle, the calculation starts with the tax for a new vehicle and applies depreciation; the relevant value is the Croatian retail price of the same vehicle when new on the date of first registration, including customs duty, VAT and factory-fitted equipment, but excluding PPMV. The table-based method does not take physical condition into account, while a market valuation may include the Croatian used-vehicle market, an inspection, a report, an objection and an expert assessment at the buyer's expense. CO2, fuel, the date, equipment and the assessment method make the amount vehicle-specific; the Croatian Customs Administration refers to NN 156/2022. 15 17 18

Pure-electric vehicles, vehicles with CO2 emissions of 0 g/km and officially classified oldtimers at least 30 years old are not subject to PPMV. A vehicle of the same age without that status has a flat-rate PPMV of EUR 265.45. This does not remove the other obligations. 15 17

For the end-of-life vehicle management fee, submit the data through the Register of Producers with Extended Responsibility (RPPO). Deduct 75 kg for the driver and 40 kg for fuel from the official mass of a non-electric vehicle, and only 75 kg for a pure-electric vehicle; multiply the result by EUR 0.08/kg. Obtain payment verification before registration. 15 19 20 21

A foreign roadworthiness report may be recognised only if it was issued by an authorised body, confirms a passed test and remains valid under Croatian time limits; the roadworthiness testing station (STP) may verify its authenticity, issuer and validity. Arrange compulsory motor third-party liability insurance before use and registration. After acceptance of the evidence or a Croatian inspection, the STP checks the documents and payments, followed by entry in the register, the registration certificate and registration plates. 4 22 23 24

The annual road motor tax depends on power in kW and age. A car older than 10 years is not taxed under this branch, but the other costs remain. 25

Keep the budget open until you have obtained quotes and decisions

The base fees in the regulations through NN 150/2022, checked on 14 September 2026, are not the total price. Do not add together alternative transport methods or tax branches, and do not turn unknown amounts into estimates.

Frequently asked questions

Which documents should I check before paying?

Ask for an invoice or agreement, the seller's authority, a matching VIN and both original parts of the Danish certificate. The first part accompanies driving abroad, but a copy does not transfer ownership. Before buying, check the VIN with an authorised representative. 5, 2, 3, 4

Is a Bilbogen check sufficient?

No. A recorded encumbrance may follow the vehicle, and a roadworthiness test does not remove it. These records do not prove the complete history or mechanical condition; inspect the car separately. 6, 7

Can I drive the car to Croatia?

Only after confirmation. The stickers may be requested no earlier than 14 days before use and are valid for no more than seven days. Check the driver, dates, recognition and insurance in every country; otherwise, use a vehicle carrier. 12, 13, 14

Does the refund automatically belong to the buyer?

No. Agree the claimant, recipient and effect on the price. An encumbrance on the application date results in rejection, and export must be proved within three months of the valuation request. The decision determines the refund. 7, 11

When is a vehicle an NPS?

It is used only if it is more than six months old and has travelled more than 6,000 km. Otherwise, it is an NPS; reporting and Croatian VAT payment are due within 10 days of acquisition. 15, 8, 9, 10

What is the Croatian sequence?

Conformity, any applicable NPS and PPMV procedures, RPPO, insurance, roadworthiness and then registration. The PP-MV declaration is due no later than 15 days after entry into Croatia, and PPMV must be paid no later than 15 days after receipt of the notice or decision. A foreign inspection is recognised conditionally, and there is no universal total cost. 15, 16, 2, 4, 22, 23, 20, 24

When you are ready for first registration

Only after completing all applicable tax, conformity, RPPO, insurance and technical steps should you check the official CVH guidance on first registration. The page does not guarantee acceptance or a universal price. 4, 22, 24
